As US CHRISTMAS enters their third decade as a band, they continue to push their music into challenging new territory, blending wall-of-sound torrents of guitar, melancholic Appalachian dirge, and experimental electronic textures into a seamless and intense whole. The band’s newest release Cannibals Of Unaka is both their first in fifteen years and the first to feature a new lineup in which founder Nate Hall’s songwriting is supplemented and supported by Michael Corwin, Tony Plichta, and Graham Scala, each of whom help draw the band’s ever-evolving approach to creation into unexpected directions. 

The album - originally released as a benefit record for Hurricane Helene relief in 2024 - is presented here in its finalized form complete with cover art by Jeremy Hush (Black Tusk, Rwake, Skeletonwitch) and mastering by Steven Warstler (Citizen, Heart Attack Man). 

Across the five tracks the band melds the psychogeography of their home in the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina, ruminations on mortality, and a borderline hermetic study of the interplay between the micro- and macrocosmic into a series of ragged jeremiads against the manner in which modern society crushes the human spirit. With a sound that integrates influences as varied as Crazy Horse, Caustic Resin, Townes Van Zandt, Coil, and Hawkwind into a seamless whole, the band’s newest release continues their decades-long journey away from the conventional and categorizable.

SECRET SHAME refuse to limit their sound to a single genre but instead pull from a wide range of influences including post-punk, death rock, shoegaze, and dream-pop. Infectious guitar melodies and interlocking bass lines lead a narrative shaped by dynamic drums.⁠ ⁠ There is a sonic tension between rage and melancholy, the beautiful and the bleak, that finds resolution in the way the music reflects the mood of the lyrics. So too does the dynamic range of Lena’s distinct voice, with the subdued resonance of gentler songs beckoning the listener nearer to her commanding presence in aggressive song.

GOLDEN GNOSIIS crafts experimental electronic soundscapes where rhythm is architecture and texture is narrative. A fusion of driving pulse, corrosive noise, and luminous sonic decay. it is the current project of local noise cryptid and cerebral spasm recordings founder ned watrshed.

SUFFERIN' FOOLS: The fine fellows in Sufferin' Fools congregate around the mountain made tunes of Cameron Thomas. Born and bred in the Carolinas, Thomas' songs share the humble joys, struggles and mysteries of a southern life - where it might lead you, who you meet, and what you bring back home. The band rides the dusty crossroads of Memphis country soul and Midwest power pop - kicking the dual guitars into overdrive for fun.

All in, the sound is as exciting as it is lovingly familiar - fleet fingers and vintage tubes burn up the tone, kick-kick-snare locks to woody warm bass, and honest words hang in the air. If the boys are in town y'all come down - and carry a rose for a listen.

Alma Russ

Alma (say it like "Alamo") lives in Mill Spring, NC when she’s not on the road. She plays patchwork music: country, folk, and Appalachian roots sewn together to make something unique. 

As a child, she fell in love with classic country when she saw The Country Bear Jamboree at Disney World. She became interested in Appalachian culture and music, started learning historic Scotch-Irish murder ballads, and took up fiddle at 12. Banjo and guitar followed, and then she made friends with a hobo who taught her to write songs, so that's what she keeps doing. Music has taken her lots of places, from the hometown bars, to church, to the highways, and she’s been bumming around the country playing her songs since she was 19. She spent a while performing as an entertainer on the passenger train in Bryson City, NC, and once she wound up getting 3 yeses from ABC's American Idol Judges on Season 1 and being sent to Hollywood, CA. She recently recorded a critically acclaimed album in an abandoned church in the West Texas desert.

Her influences include John Prine, Gillian Welch, Patty Griffin, Nanci Griffith, Townes Van Zandt, Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, Dolly Parton, among others.

Double Love & the Trouble is a 8-Piece All-Covers Two-Headed Horn-Fueled Rocking Soul Machine bringing a driving sexy sound to the ears of Asheville, NC.  We are non-stop party energy bringing good times.     We focus on 60’s and 70’s Rocking Soul covers, but add the right amount of edge to not be an “Oldies” Band.  This includes songs from Stevie Wonder, Doobie Brothers, The Band, The Ronettes, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett and The Beatles.  All done with style and flare.

Andy and Mandy are a brother and sister classic country duo that brings low brow laughs with a high lonesome sound across the lowcountry. Consisting of Grammy nominated multi-instrumentalist and producer, Andrew Sovine (not to mention the grandson of Red Sovine) and opera singer turned country starlet, Mandy Madson who traded the stage of Carnegie Hall for the dim lights of the honky tonks, these two plus their backing band bring you your favorite sadass country songs (as well as a few originals to cry along to) every February from the coast of Savannah to the mountains of Asheville.

As their name suggests, MONSTER WAVE plays exactly that: an eerie instrumental surf-rock sound that could be the soundtrack for a haunted tiki bar. They have go-go grooves, melodic guitars and a rhythmic beat that will get you twistin' and stompin' into the night! According to Ox-Fanzine, its "as if Dick Dale were setting a few episodes of The Munsters to music". So grab your favorite ghoul and get ready to dance, because remember: sitting still is forbidden! THE BIG SKY is Asheville’s newest instrumental guitar band. Fusing "spaghetti western" vibes with psychedelic surf tunes and Chicago-style post-rock bands like Tortoise and Brokeback, the rock quartet wants every song to sound different than the last. While there is little improvisation, the songs themselves capture the energy and freedom of a live jam, wherein double guitar parts and heavy drums could be mistaken for peak Allman Brothers or Hendrix-style sonic exploration. As AltSceneAVL writes, "The Big Sky is ultimately a feedback loop between squaring the sound and feel of improvisation with composed music.”
